The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a powerful encounter with God's healing grace, offered to those who are seriously ill, facing surgery, or experiencing the challenges of old age. Through this sacrament, Christ comes to comfort, strengthen, and spiritually heal those in need, bringing peace and courage in the face of suffering. The sacrament reminds us that God is present with us in our trials, holding us in His merciful love and inviting us to unite our suffering with His.

The origins of Anointing of the Sick can be found in the Gospels, where Jesus healed the sick and showed compassion for the suffering. In the letter of James, we are encouraged: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the Church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord" (James 5:14-15). This sacrament continues this ministry of healing within the Church, where the priest anoints the sick person with blessed oil, prays over them, and invokes the grace of the Holy Spirit.

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick provides strength and hope, granting spiritual and sometimes physical healing according to God’s will. It offers a profound sense of peace, reminding the person that they are not alone in their suffering. For those who are seriously ill, the sacrament can also prepare them to meet God with trust and love, renewing their faith in God’s promise of eternal life.

El Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos es un encuentro poderoso con la gracia sanadora de Dios, ofrecido a quienes están gravemente enfermos, enfrentan una cirugía o experimentan los desafíos de la vejez. A través de este sacramento, Cristo viene a consolar, fortalecer y sanar espiritualmente a quienes lo necesitan, trayendo paz y valentía ante el sufrimiento. Este sacramento nos recuerda que Dios está presente en nuestras pruebas, sosteniéndonos con Su amor misericordioso y llamándonos a unir nuestro sufrimiento al Suyo.

La Unción de los Enfermos tiene sus raíces en los Evangelios, donde Jesús sanó a los enfermos y mostró compasión por los que sufrían. En la carta de Santiago, se nos anima: "¿Está enfermo alguno de ustedes? Llame a los presbíteros de la Iglesia para que oren por él y lo unjan con aceite en el nombre del Señor" (Santiago 5:14-15). Este sacramento continúa este ministerio de sanación dentro de la Iglesia, donde el sacerdote unge al enfermo con aceite bendecido, ora por él e invoca la gracia del Espíritu Santo.

El Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos proporciona fortaleza y esperanza, otorgando sanación espiritual y, a veces, física, según la voluntad de Dios. Ofrece un profundo sentido de paz, recordando a la persona que no está sola en su sufrimiento. Para quienes están gravemente enfermos, este sacramento también puede prepararlos para encontrarse con Dios con confianza y amor, renovando su fe en la promesa de la vida eterna.
